226 – Elk of Canada

The elk population was once spread out across most of North America, but they were killed off and began taking refuge in more remote locations of the continent.  As the summer season approaches, wildlife enthusiasts might find females, like the one photographed here, in high mountain grazing fields, as they prepare to give birth.  An elk calf can stand by the time it is twenty minutes old.
