61 – Canada’s Not So Ancient Forest

According to ‘Natural Resources Canada,’ the country’s pristine wilderness to the north isn’t as ancient as one might have guessed.  While the boreal zone itself is of ancient origins, the boreal forest is comprised of relatively young trees, compared to some warmer climates.  Due to forest fires, insects and diseases the boreal forest faces regular disturbances and periods of renewal.  These disturbances, however inconvenient to those who choose to dwell in boreal zones, are necessary as they allow new trees to germinate, existing trees to release important nutrients for vegetation, aged trees to be removed and areas of land to once again be exposed to sunlight.
