319 – The Price of Telling Time

This year, expect the property tax of the small piece of land the King Street Clock lies on, donated in celebration of Saint John’s 225th birthday, to rise.  The property assessment, back when the clock was donated, was only at $100, meaning a $2.21 tax bill.  The assessment has since risen up to over $1400, and a $30+ tax bill, of which the city will get back about $16.50, after the province takes their cut.  Oh how arbitrary some of our tax laws are, ‘In the True North, strong and free.’  I guess it’s just the price you pay for beauty, and to tell time, in Canada’s oldest incorporated city.
