238 – The Historic Prince William Street

Pictured on the right side of the former ‘Bank of New Brunswick’ building, in this photograph of the nationally recognized Prince William streetscape, is perhaps my favourite building in the entire Saint John.  The former post-office, with it’s beautifully crafted sandstone walls, is currently being converted into loft-style condominiums.  A friend of mine is currently working as a foreman in the building, and informed me in fact, that this building I so often admire, was the first in Canada to use steel beams as a structural support.  I guess you can expect a lot of firsts though in Canada’s oldest incorporated city.  Another testament to the historical significance of Saint John, and need to preserve these treasures.
