217 – The Young Monument

This monument, formally presented to the city of Saint John on October 30, 1891, is a memorial to a boy who lost his life in a brave attempt to save another boy from drowning in Courtenay Bay.  The inscription on the memorial is as follows:

“YOUNG MONUMENT.

Erected as a Public Memorial to John

Frederick Young,

Who in the nineteenth year of his age

lost his life on the thirtieth day

of October, A. D., 1890

In Courtenay Bay, Saint John, New

Brunswick,

While endeavouring to rescue Frederick

E. Mundee from drowning.

Greater love hath no man than this,

that a man lay down his life for his

friend.

YOUNG.

Faithful Unto Death”
